2020年３月31日（現地時間）をもって、英王室を離脱するヘンリー王子（35）とメーガン・マークル（38）。「サセックスロイヤル」のインスタグラムアカウントから、ロイヤルメンバーとして最後のメッセージを投稿した。
投稿には「私たちをサポートし、インスピレーションを与え、そして世界をより良くするために協力してくださった皆さんに感謝します」と綴られた画像とともに、全世界に蔓延する新型コロナウイルスにまつわる長文が。
「誰もが感じているように、いまの世界はとても脆いです。それでも私たちは、家族、コミュニティ、そして最前線で戦っている方々に対して、お互いを元気づけることができます。いま最も重要なのは、世界中の人々の健康であり、パンデミックにより生じた多く問題の解決策を見つけることです。（中略）どうか、ご自身そしてお互いを大事にしてください」と思いをぶつけた。

つい先日、新型コロナウイルスの感染防止で国境が封鎖される前に、カナダからアメリカ・ロサンゼルスに移住したと報じられたヘンリー王子とメーガン。
これを受けて、米ドナルド・トランプ大統領（73）は、エリザベス女王（93）やイギリスとの関係は良好であることをアピールしつつ、「（ヘンリー王子とメーガンに）警備費は一切支払わない。自分たちで支払うべきだ！」とツイート。米国内で死者3,000人を超えるなどの被害が広がるなか、トランプ大統領の発言には多くの国民から賞賛する声が挙がった。

対するヘンリー王子とメーガンは、トランプ大統領のツイートから数時間後に「アメリカ政府に警備費の負担を求めるつもりはない」と声明を発表。しかし、莫大な警備費をどのように賄うか具体的な説明はされぬまま。
４月１日（現地時間）からはサセックス公爵の名を捨て、「ヘンリー」と「メーガン」として出発を切るふたり。まだ幼いアーチーのためにも、新生活が一刻も早く落ち着くことを願うばかり。
